A very popular question that interior designers get is...

What are some ways to layer lighting in my home?

Know the types of lighting and their purposes!

There are 4 main types of lighting.

-Ambient

-Task

-Accent

-Decorative

Ambient lighting is the general lighting needed for a room.

Think of this as your "ceiling lighting". Sometimes this is one central fixture, recessed lights, or even wall-mounted fixtures.

Task lighting provides light for focused tasks.

Think reading, prepping food, doing your makeup.

Accent lighting highlights points of interests.

Paintings and art on the wall, or an area of the room you want to draw attention to. My favorite example of accent lighting are picture lights.

An in-progress family room project at Olivia Marshall Interior Design, utilizes a linear picture light to accent a piece of art.

I bet you can guess what Decorative Lighting is.. :)

Decorative lighting like this table lamp, is all about aesthetics and personal style. I love how it can bring warmth to a space.

Experiment and be bold!

There isn't a right and wrong way to layer lighting. However, layering the 4 different types of lighting in a space and finding a combination that both looks and feels good to you, will light up your room in a new and fresh way.

I love to help clients find their perfect equation of layered lighting!
